The emotional Roller Coaster, FIFA world cup 2014

The spectacle that was the FIFA world cup 2014 has been done and dusted. They say good things come in 3's, for Brazil they came in 7, but I am not going to go there. They came, the crushed Brazil and they conquered. They made Lionel Messi cry for Argentina. Yes, the Germans won the world cup. And what a world cup it was, the joint highest scoring world cup in history (with France 98), Brazil 2014 had it all. The football was so good that everyone forgot about the unfinished stadia, deaths during stadium construction and anti government protests. For a month, all things in Brazil revolved around their beloved Selecao. Since the premier league won't start for another 16 days, I am left to reminisce on world cup memories.

There is a myth that men are not very emotional creatures, the hack who said that clearly had never watched a football match. Nothing displays the range of emotion inside a man or a woman like a football match, more specifically when a goal is scored or conceded. They say that it takes 10 seconds to score a goal, if you're a German named Muller it might take less and if you're a Brazilian named Fred it might take longer. The emotional cocktail inside a football fan before a goal is scored would fascinate any scientist and when the goal goes in, the mixture of emotions erupt like a volcano. Now just imagine what the players go through?

I have decided to do a little show and tell, get the popcorn. The match is Ivory Coast Vs Greece, the prize is a place in the next round. Greece must win and Ivory coast need a draw. Ivory coast equalize in the second half after Greece took a first half lead, cue emotional cocktail number 1.

Elation, ecstasy, unrestricted joy

At this point, Ivory Coast have one foot in the next round. All they have to do is hold on for a draw. But, astonishingly Greece attack and get a penalty. Cue emotional cocktail number 2.

Suspense, tension.

The Greeks score and knock Ivory Coast out of the tournament. Obviously the elephants are crest fallen, some were never ready and most of them just can't fathom what transpired. Cue emotional cocktail number 3.

Disappointment, sadness, desolation.

The Greeks are obviously delighted, they go beserk. Cue emotional cocktail number 4.

Relief, joy, delight.

There must be a winner and there must be a loser, but in the midst of battle, one must never lose touch with his humanity. Always pick up a fellow fallen man. Cue emotional cocktail number 5.

Compassion, empathy.

So just to recap. An event that only requires 10 seconds to take place can result in an escalation from emotional cocktail 1 to 5, the order is not always chronological. Are we following? Yes? No? Okay, how about one last example?

2, 3, 1

When Emotions spill over

Sometimes, the players just can't control themselves, resulting in things we normally don't want to see on the football field. But, they are only human right? Some might argue that a certain Uruguayan is half vampire, but I won't go there.

So just about does it for this class in the emotional roller coaster of football. So till next time, stay out of trouble, persevere and flourish. And don't bite anyone, at least not on the football field.
